I don’t know where exactly this dish gets its name from but I like to think that it’s a staple at summer BBQs and holiday parties in the Volunteer State. What meal isn’t made better by having super cheesy onions as a side?
Serve them with steak or burgers on top, beside pork chops, or add to the Thanksgiving side dish lineup. There’s no bad time for an easy dish that’s as delicious as this one!
While it only requires a few ingredients and is pretty much just slicing and layering, this recipe does not skimp on flavor. Start by slicing sweet onions (we used vidalia which I highly recommend if they’re in season!) into rings and spreading them out in a prepared baking dish. Then, it’s all about the cheese! We used a mix of Italian blend and cheddar for this recipe but you really can’t go wrong with your cheese choice here. Asiago, swiss- even gouda could be fun ones to try for a different flavor profile.
